Everything you need to know about Am I on Mute?

Getting Started

How do I install the app?
Download Am I on Mute? from the Mac App Store. Once downloaded, open it from your Applications folder or Launchpad. The app will appear in your menu bar and a floating mute button will show on your screen.
How do I grant microphone access?
When you first open the app, macOS will ask you to allow microphone access. Click Allow. If you accidentally denied it, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and toggle Am I on Mute? on.
How does the floating button work?
The floating button sits on top of all your windows, including fullscreen apps. It shows your current mute status at a glance — red when muted, green when unmuted. Click it to toggle. With Pro, you can drag it anywhere, resize it, and change its shape and colour.
How do I mute and unmute?
Click the floating button or use the menu bar icon to toggle mute. With Pro, you can also set a custom keyboard shortcut or use push-to-talk mode.
What are the menu bar controls?
The menu bar icon shows your current mute status. Click it to mute or unmute, access settings, switch microphones, or quit the app.

Features

What is the speaking pulse indicator?
When you're unmuted, the speaking pulse gives you a visual confirmation that your microphone is picking up audio. The button gently pulses when it detects sound, so you can be confident your voice is coming through. This is a Pro feature.
How do I use push-to-talk?
Push-to-talk keeps you muted by default. Hold down your assigned shortcut key to temporarily unmute — release it and you're muted again. Great for noisy environments. You can configure the shortcut key in settings. This is a Pro feature.
How do I set up keyboard shortcuts?
Open the app's settings from the menu bar and navigate to the shortcuts section. You can assign any key combination to toggle mute, or set a separate key for push-to-talk. Shortcuts work globally across all apps. This is a Pro feature.
How does auto-hide work?
With auto-hide enabled, the floating button only appears when you're on a call and hides itself when you're not. The app detects when an app is using your microphone and shows the button automatically. This is a Pro feature.
How do I customise the button?
In settings, you can change the button's colour, size, opacity, and shape (pill, circle, or square). You can also drag it to any position on your screen. This is a Pro feature.
How do I use it on multiple monitors?
With Pro, the floating button can appear on all your connected displays. Enable multi-monitor support in settings and you'll see your mute status no matter which screen you're looking at.

Compatibility

Which apps does it work with?
Am I on Mute? mutes your microphone at the system level, so it works with every app — Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Discord, FaceTime, Webex, GoToMeeting, Telegram, and any other app that uses your microphone. No plugins or integrations needed.
Does it work with Bluetooth headphones?
Yes. The app works with all built-in microphones, Bluetooth headsets (including AirPods), and wired headphones.
Are there any hardware limitations?
Some niche USB audio interfaces can't be muted at the macOS system level, which means Am I on Mute? won't be able to control them. All built-in mics, Bluetooth, and wired headphones work fine. The app will warn you if it detects an incompatible device.

Troubleshooting

The app isn't muting my microphone
First, check that you've granted microphone access in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. If the permission is already enabled, try toggling it off and on again. Also check that your audio device is supported — some USB audio interfaces can't be muted at the system level.
The floating button isn't showing
Make sure the app is running — check for the icon in your menu bar. If you have auto-hide enabled (Pro), the button will only appear when an app is using your microphone. Try starting a call or opening an app that uses your mic to see it appear.
The button doesn't appear in fullscreen
The floating button is designed to stay on top of fullscreen apps. If it's not appearing, try quitting and reopening the app. If the issue persists, check that macOS hasn't revoked the app's accessibility permissions in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
I'm having microphone permission issues
Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and make sure Am I on Mute? is toggled on. If it's not listed, try removing the app and reinstalling it from the Mac App Store. macOS should prompt you for permission again on first launch.

Privacy & Billing

Does the app record my audio?
No. Am I on Mute? never records your audio. It only controls your microphone's mute state and monitors audio levels for the speaking pulse indicator. Nothing is recorded, stored, or transmitted.
How do I restore my Pro purchase?
If you've already purchased Pro, open the app and go to settings. Your purchase is linked to your Apple ID, so it should restore automatically. If it doesn't, click "Restore Purchase" in the Pro section. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you used for the original purchase.
