How to Mute Yourself in Slack Huddles on Mac

Huddles are meant to be quick and casual. You join, then go back to work in other apps, which is exactly when it's easy to forget your mic is on.

Quick answer

To mute yourself in a Slack huddle on a Mac, click the microphone button in the huddle controls. A line through the mic icon means you're muted. Slack also has a huddle mute shortcut, listed in its keyboard shortcuts panel (⌘/). Both only work inside Slack, so if you work in other apps during huddles, a system-level mute such as Am I on Mute? (⌘⇧M from any app) is a useful backstop.

How do I mute myself in a Slack huddle?

  1. Start or join a huddle from a channel or direct message.
  2. Find the huddle controls. Slack shows them in the huddle window, and in a smaller huddle panel while you move between conversations.
  3. Click the microphone button. A line through the icon means you're muted. Click it again to unmute.

Assume your mic is live the moment you join, and glance at the mic button before you say anything you wouldn't say to the whole channel.

To choose which microphone Slack uses, open Slack's Preferences (⌘,) and go to Audio & video.

What's the Slack huddle mute shortcut on Mac?

Slack has a keyboard shortcut for muting and unmuting yourself in a huddle. Slack updates its shortcuts from time to time, so the reliable place to find the current one is Slack itself:

  1. Click into the Slack window so it's the active app.
  2. Press ⌘/ to open Slack's keyboard shortcuts panel.
  3. Look for the huddle shortcuts and note the one for mute.

The catch: Slack's shortcuts only work while Slack is the active app. If you're typing in a document, a browser or your notes, the keystroke goes to that app instead, and your huddle mic stays as it was.

Why can't I mute a Slack huddle from another app?

Keyboard shortcuts on a Mac go to the app in front. Slack's huddle shortcut is part of Slack, so it can't fire while you're in another app.

The mute button has the same problem. It lives inside Slack's window. If Slack is behind other windows, on another display or in another desktop space, you can't see whether you're muted without switching back.

Huddles are designed to sit in the background while you work, so this happens more often than in a scheduled meeting where the call window is front and centre.

How do I mute a Slack huddle when Slack isn't in focus?

Mute at the system level instead. A system-level mute silences the microphone itself, so Slack gets silence whichever app is in front.

The built-in way is slow: System Settings → Sound → Input, then drag Input volume down, and back up again before you speak.

Am I on Mute? makes it one step:

  • Press ⌘⇧M from any app to mute. This is free.
  • Click the floating button to mute or unmute. It stays on top of every app, even fullscreen, and shows MUTED or LIVE.
  • Option-click the menu bar icon to toggle mute.
  • Unmuting with the shortcut, custom shortcut keys and push-to-talk (hold ⌥Space, off by default) are part of Pro. See push-to-talk on Mac.

One thing to know: Slack doesn't see a system-level mute. Its own mic button will still look unmuted while the floating button says MUTED, and the huddle hears silence. If you've muted in both places, unmute both before you talk.

Method Works when Slack isn't the active app? Shows status outside Slack?
Huddle mic button No, you need Slack's window No
Slack's huddle shortcut No No
System Settings → Sound input volume Yes, but takes several clicks No
Am I on Mute? (⌘⇧M or floating button) Yes Yes, floating button and menu bar icon

Why can't people hear me in a Slack huddle?

  1. Slack's mic button: make sure it isn't showing as muted.
  2. System-level mute: if you use Am I on Mute?, check the floating button says LIVE.
  3. The right microphone: check Slack's Preferences → Audio & video, and System Settings → Sound → Input. See why your Mac picks the wrong microphone.
  4. Microphone permission: open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and make sure Slack is turned on. If you use Slack in a browser, check the browser instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I mute myself in a Slack huddle on a Mac?

Click the microphone button in the huddle controls. A line through the mic icon means you're muted. Click it again to unmute.

What is the keyboard shortcut to mute in a Slack huddle?

Slack has a huddle mute shortcut. Press ⌘/ in Slack to open its keyboard shortcuts panel and look for the huddle shortcuts. It only works while Slack is the active app.

Can I mute a Slack huddle without switching to Slack?

Not with Slack's own controls. A system-level mute works from any app: Am I on Mute? mutes your microphone with ⌘⇧M wherever you are, and the huddle hears silence.

Why does Slack show me as unmuted when Am I on Mute? says I'm muted?

Slack doesn't see a system-level mute, so its mic button doesn't change. Your microphone is still muted at the system level and the huddle hears silence. Trust the floating MUTED / LIVE button.

Does Am I on Mute? work with Slack huddles?

Yes. It mutes at the macOS system level, so it works with Slack huddles and every other app that uses your microphone, with no plugin or integration.
