What Does the Orange Dot on My Mac Mean?

That small orange dot near the top-right corner of your screen is macOS telling you something is listening. It's a useful privacy signal. It's also easy to misread in the middle of a call.

Quick answer

The orange dot in the Mac menu bar means an app is using your microphone right now. Open Control Centre to see which app. It does not tell you whether you're muted in Zoom, Teams, Meet or Slack: call apps usually keep the microphone open while you're muted, so the dot stays orange either way.

What does the orange dot on a Mac mean?

Since macOS Monterey, macOS shows an orange dot in the menu bar, next to the Control Centre icon, whenever an app is using your microphone. It appears as soon as an app starts taking audio from a mic and disappears when every app has stopped.

It shows up for any app, not just call apps: a meeting in a browser tab, a voice recorder, a game's voice chat, or a utility that reads your input level.

The dot is about the microphone only. It doesn't mean your camera is on, and it doesn't mean anyone can hear you right now.

What's the difference between the orange dot and the green light?

Orange means microphone. Green means camera. On a Mac with a built-in camera, a green light next to the camera comes on whenever the camera is active. Apple designs it so the camera can't run without the light.

On a video call you'll usually see both: the green light for the camera and the orange dot for the mic.

Indicator Where you see it What it means
Orange dot Menu bar, next to Control Centre An app is using a microphone
Green light Beside the Mac's built-in camera The camera is on
Am I on Mute? button Floating on top of every app MUTED or LIVE: whether your mic is muted at the system level

How do I see which app is using my microphone?

  1. Click Control Centre in the menu bar (the icon with two switches, near the clock).
  2. Look at the top of the panel. macOS lists the app or apps using the microphone.
  3. If it's an app you don't expect, quit it, or close the browser tab that's using the mic.

Control Centre may also list apps that used the microphone recently, which helps when the dot appeared for a moment and vanished.

If the app shown is a browser, the dot comes from a website. Find the tab using the mic and close it or leave the meeting.

Don't confuse this with the permission list. System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone shows every app that is allowed to use the mic, not which ones are using it now. Turn an app off there to stop it accessing the mic in future.

Does the orange dot mean I'm unmuted on my call?

No. The dot means an app has the microphone open. Whether people on the call can hear you depends on the call app's mute button and on any system-level mute, and the dot knows about neither.

Call apps usually keep the microphone open while you're muted in the app. They stop sending your voice to the meeting but keep listening on your Mac. That's how Zoom and Teams can warn you that you seem to be talking while muted. So you can be properly muted in Zoom with the orange dot on the whole time.

The reverse is also true. Muting at the system level, with an app like Am I on Mute?, doesn't make the dot go away. The call app still has the microphone open; it just gets silence.

Situation Orange dot Can the call hear you?
In a call, unmuted On Yes
In a call, muted in the call app Usually on No
In a call, muted at the system level On No
No app using the mic Off No

The one thing the dot does tell you for certain: if there's no orange dot, no app on your Mac is using a microphone at that moment.

How can I check if I'm actually muted on a Mac?

  1. Check the call app's mic button. A microphone with a line through it means the app is muted. If the call window is hidden, bring it forward. Shortcuts such as ⌘⇧A in Zoom and ⌘⇧M in Teams only work while that app is in front.
  2. Check which mic is live. Open System Settings → Sound and look under Input. Speak: if the input level meter moves, that microphone is live at the system level, even if the call app is muting it.
  3. Check which mic the call app uses. In Zoom it's Settings → Audio → Microphone; in Teams, Settings → Devices. If the app picks a different mic from the one you muted, you're not muted. See why your Mac picks the wrong microphone.
  4. Use an indicator that's always visible. A status you can see without switching windows beats any of the checks above.

Am I on Mute? puts a floating button on top of every app, even fullscreen, showing MUTED or LIVE. It mutes at the macOS level, so it covers Zoom, Teams, Meet, Slack, FaceTime and every other app at once. Press ⌘⇧M from any app to mute, free.

After you mute, its free mute check listens to confirm the mic really went quiet. If it didn't, you get a warning, "Your Mic Is Still Live", with a button to switch to the built-in mic and mute it.

Microphone permission for Am I on Mute? is optional. Muting works without it; it's only used for the mute check and the speaking indicator, so you may see the app listed in Control Centre while those run. Nothing is recorded.

Frequently asked questions

What does the orange dot on my Mac mean?

It means an app is currently using your microphone. macOS has shown it in the menu bar since macOS Monterey. Open Control Centre to see which app is using the mic.

Why is the orange dot on when I'm muted?

Call apps usually keep the microphone open while you're muted in the app, and a system-level mute doesn't close the mic either. The dot shows that an app is using the microphone, not whether the call can hear you.

How do I get rid of the orange dot on my Mac?

Quit the app that is using the microphone, or close the browser tab. Control Centre shows which app it is. macOS doesn't offer a setting to hide the indicator, because it's a privacy feature.

What's the difference between the orange dot and the green light on a Mac?

The orange dot means an app is using a microphone. The green light next to the Mac's built-in camera means the camera is on.

Should I worry if the orange dot appears when I'm not on a call?

Check Control Centre to see which app is using the mic. If you don't recognise it or didn't expect it, quit it and turn its access off in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.

Can Am I on Mute? turn off the orange dot?

No. Am I on Mute? silences the microphone at the system level, but the call app still has the mic open, so the dot stays on. Use the floating MUTED / LIVE button to see whether you're actually muted.
